At least 93 people who were forcefully evicted from, and dispossessed of, their ancestral land decades ago have received a combined financial compensation of R12m.
The Limpopo regional land claims commission said the compensation was agreed upon because the land could not be restored to the victims.
"These claims for restitution are of those masses of people who were removed by the Apartheid government between 1968 and 1972 as a result of the establishment of Bantu homelands," said commission spokesperson Avhashoni Magada.
"Each individual claimant will receive R129 839.77 as compensation for loss of right in land."
The claimants were adversely affected by the forced removals as they had also lost their livelihoods along the way.
Magada said the beneficiaries were Tsonga-speaking people who had lived side-by-side with VhaVenda people and were forced to resettle at Gazankulu.
Three villages - Ntlhaveni, Makahlule and Phaphazela - were established to accommodate the victims.
Rural Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti had approved the individual land claims for financial compensation, as the land was not restorable.
The amount allocated represented the full and final settlement of the individual claims lodged before December 31 1998.
