George's DA mayor accused of assaulting his wife

DA mayor in the George Municipality, Charles Stander, has been accused of beating up his wife.

The Democratic Alliance in the province said it was aware of the accusations.

"A letter was sent to Mr Stander yesterday [Wednesday], giving him until today (24 hours) to provide reasons why he should not be suspended from the DA, pending a disciplinary hearing," provincial spokesperson Liza Albrecht said.

"In the meantime, charges are being prepared and will be served on him in due course."

Western Cape police confirmed that a case of assault related to domestic violence was laid at the Conville police station regarding an incident which happened on Monday.

However, Captain Malcolm Pojie said police could not confirm the name of suspect.

"The complainant alleges that she and her husband (the suspect) had an argument over his car keys when he allegedly assaulted her," he said.

"She sustained injuries to her ankle."

No arrests have been made yet.
