South African Revenue Service Customs Control officials have seized ephedrine and abalone valued at more than R10 million.

Sars spokesman Sandile Memela said on Wednesday a routine inspection led to the arrest of a Tanzanian male passenger from Dar Es Salam who was carrying two pieces of luggage.

Inspection of the bags unveiled seven transparent bags containing a crystal substance that turned out to be Ephedrine‚ weighing 26kg.

In the second incident‚ a detector dog identified a consignment of abalone worth R2-million at the OR Tambo International Airport.

“Investigations revealed dry abalone hidden in Sheen wrap weighing 577kg‚” he said. “This was handed over to SAPS for further investigations.”
