Kwaito group Big Nuz is paying fees for some impoverished, yet bright students.
One of the students to benefit from the group's generosity is Khombindlela High School matriculant Sithembile Gumede, who obtained eight distinctions in last year's matric examinations.
Group member Mandla "Mampitsha" Maphumulo said instead of throwing parties regularly group members have decided to help disadvantaged matriculants pursue their careers.
"We have planned to assist about five more matriculants who don't have university registration fees. It is going to a good cause," he said.
Maphumulo said the death last year of group member Sibusiso "R-Mashesha" Khomo has made them realise that life was too short not to help other people.
"We want not only to be remembered for releasing great music, but also for helping out in our communities. We don't do it for publicity, we do it for the community," Maphumulo said.
He disclosed that he had used his vacation money to sponsor people and help out whenever he could.
Gumede, of eMpangeni on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, said he would now realise his dream of studying at the University of KZN for a BCom accounting degree.
"I can't believe this is happening to me... Big Nuz [have] offered to [also pay] my tuition and accommodation," Gumede said.
