SA actress caught with R4.6 million worth of drugs at airport

UPDATE: The South African Police Service (SAPS) has revealed that the person arrested for drugs at OR Tambo Airport is not an actress and is not famous as earlier reported.

SAPS released a statement clearing the confusion that sparked social media uproar:

"A South African woman was arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday afternoon, 27 September 2015, shortly after landing on a flight from Abu Dhabi. The 29 year old accused allegedly travelled with Ephedrine concealed in her luggage. She has been charged with dealing in drugs.

Ephedrine weighing 15 450 grams, estimated to be worth over R4 million, was discovered when her luggage was searched as she went through customs after alleging that she had nothing to declare.

Contrary to public belief, the arrested woman is not a South African celebrity. She will appear at the Kempton Park Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 29 September 2015."

Earlier:

The bust was at the OR Tambo International Airport‚ South African Revenue Service said in a statement‚ describing it as “a significant seizure”.

The actress‚ who cannot be named until she has appeared in court‚ had unsuccessfully tried to slip past Customs officials.

Officials discovered 15.4 kilograms of ephedrine in her bag. SARS said the narcotics have an estimated street value of R4.6 million.

“The passenger‚ who was proceeding through the ‘Nothing to declare channel-Green channel’‚ was stopped by Customs officials for her bags to be scanned. The scanning of her one bag showed up suspicious images. Upon further investigation and searching of the bag‚ officials discovered 15 parcels wrapped in carbon/foil-like material hidden in the luggage. Immediate tests conducted by SARS officials confirmed that the suspected substance was ephedrine‚ which is the main ingredient in crystal meth.

“The narcotics and passenger‚ identified as a South African actress‚ were detained and subsequently handed over to South African Police Service (SAPS) Organised Crime for further investigation.”
