Couple suspected of involvement in ‘sophisticated’ R51m scam

A couple Johannesburg whose alleged fraud caused a “suspected loss to the fiscus of approximately R51-million” were released on bail after appearing in Johannesburg Regional Court on Tuesday.

That’s according to the South African Revenue Service (Sars)‚ which said Fazel Karodia and his wife‚ Amina‚ both 43‚ were released on bail of R75000 and R25000 respectively.

The pair were arrested earlier the same day and are “suspected of involvement in a sophisticated multimillion-rand fraudulent VAT refund scam”.

The will appear in court again on January 20.
