Corrupt traffic officers will spend New Year in jail

Traffic officers who accepted bribes from motorists would spend the New Year behind bars, Road Traffic Management Corporation CEO, Advocate Makhosini Msibi, assured the media on Tuesday.

"We want to make sure that they know we no longer tolerate those who are muddying our name, as well as the name of other good law enforcers; we can’t allow a handful to taint our name," Msibi said during a briefing on the current state of road safety.

The organisation had joined hands with the police and the Hawks to conduct an operation to investigate the issue.

"We have arrested officers in the Tshwane metro who have taken bribes from as little as R100 to R300. We are going to continue doing this.

"We have traffic officers who are undercover particularly for this operation, but we call on the public to also inform us when our traffic officers are calling for bribes on the road," he said.

Msibi said the information gathering part of their investigation was over and that arrests were imminent. He said they would give an official statement once they had made the arrests.
