Close to a hundred people lost their homes on Thursday when a fire engulfed 18 shacks in Marlboro, north of Johannesburg, emergency management services said.
"We got a call around 10.00 this morning that about 18 shacks [had been destroyed in a fire]," spokesperson Nana Radebe said.
Between 80 and 100 people had been affected. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Soon after the fire was extinguished, residents began rebuilding the shacks again, Radebe said.
The cause of the fire was still unclear.
