Man killed in horror Durban mill accident

A man was crushed to death while cleaning a silo in a flour mill in the Phoenix Industrial Park, north of Durban on Tuesday.

It is understood that the man had been inside the silo when the blades of a steel auger screw were activated, drawing him in and crushing him to death.

Members of the Police Search and Rescue Unit struggled for over seven hours to free the man’s body from the inner workings of the silo, which all had to be done at a height of 15 metres above the ground.

The silo had to be completely dismantled while electricity to the mill had been shut off.

Trauma councillors had to be called to the scene to tend to other members of staff at the factory who had been working when the accident happened.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed the incident and said detectives would be investigating the incident.
