Bogus cop targets motorists

A motorist didn't suspect anything untoward when a metro police officer stopped her in Krugersdorp.

The "officer", who was dressed in a uniform similar to that of the Mogale City Metro Police Department, a blue shirt and khaki pants, approached the woman's vehicle and inspected its licence disc after stopping her.

"He then produced a two-way radio saying he was checking if the vehicle was stolen. He allegedly went back to his car and returned to the victim with a firearm in his hand and told the victim that 'this is a robbery, give me your watch, earrings and a wedding ring," said police spokeswoman Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale.

"The victim complied and handed over her belongings and was ordered to drive and not look back which she did," Mashale said.

She said the alleged attack happened on Monday at around 10.35am along Robert Broom Road, at the corner of Wren Street, in Chancliff, Krugersdorp.

Police are now searching for the man who is suspected to have been involved in a similar crime in which a another motorist was robbed.

The suspect was described as a tall, well-built man with a shaved head and a scar on his chin.

Mashale said they don't know if there are other cases but urged victims to come forward.

On Tuesday, two other complaints were lodged with the police about a man in metro police uniform who robbed them in the same street where the woman was robbed on Monday.

"The local traffic department and police will have a meeting to see how best we can solve the problem," Mashale said.
