INJURED: Khutso Mothapo was allegedly assaulted by cops

A Limpopo police station has failed to open a case against three police officers implicated in the vicious assault of a pupil who was attacked in full view of his peers during exams.

The Grade 10 pupil was writing a history exam at Dr AMS Makunyane Secondary School in Seshego last Friday when a teacher accused him of cheating .

This was after he was found writing the paper's question 4 section while others were still on the first question.

The victim, Khutso Mothapo, 20, said he decided to start with question 4 because it was an essay on King Shaka, which he knew well.

"I was busy writing when the teacher accused me of copying. She took away my answer sheet and told me that for as long as she worked at the school I will never pass," Mothapo said.

He said he was slapped on the face and when he asked what he had done the teacher summoned police to the school.

Mothapo said after the teacher had spoken to the police officers outside the exam room, they entered and went for him. All three took turns in assaulting him in front of fellow pupils who watched helplessly, he said.

He said although he started bleeding from the nose, they continued kicking him all over the body while he was down.

He was later treated at Seshego Clinic for injuries to his eardrums and body.

Although he tried to open a case at Seshego police station, police had still not given him a case number by yesterday.

Sowetan has also established that a case was not opened.

However, Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesman Robbie Raburabu said they were busy facilitating the opening of the case.

Spokesman for the provincial department of education Dr Naledzani Rasila said they had sent officials to the school to investigate .

"We cannot say who is wrong or right at the moment. We will establish facts around the matter and subject those facts to scrutiny," Rasila said.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said they would investigate why a case was not opened.
