The Limpopo father accused of butchering his four sons wrote a tribute to his children and a letter of apology to his wife.

The Magatle Periodical Court in Zebediela heard that Lesiba Kekana, who allegedly killed his four children by slitting their throats on September 6, sent a police officer to deliver the letter to his grieving wife, Lorraine Kekana.

And when he learnt that she had rejected the letter, Kekana pleaded with the cop to use the letter as a confession statement.

Warrant Officer Alpheus Madisha told the court that he was sent to fetch Kekana from Polokwane Hospital on September 13, after he had been discharged, to take him to the police holding cells.

Kekana, 37, was admitted to hospital after he cut his own throat in a suicide attempt.

This happened on the same day he had allegedly killed his own children in Makiting section of Magatle.

In the letter, read to the court by senior state prosecutor Keneilwe Mashamaite, Kekana said he was sorry he killed the boys, aged 13, 10, six and four, in cold blood.

"I know the word sorry will never bring back the Bafanas (referring to his sons). I should have listened to you my beautiful queen when you told me of evil forces that were trying to separate us," the letter reads in part.

He further reminisced about how happy he was when all the boys were born and how he used to spend time with them.

"I failed you as your husband and I feel sorry for my actions. May the souls of the departed children be accepted in the third Heaven," it stated.

In another twist, Mashamaite read an affidavit allegedly written by the children's mother Lorraine, who pleaded with the court not to grant bail to her husband, saying she feared for her safety.

Lorraine said she had suffered abuse at the hands of Kekana for many years.

The court heard that the couple met in 2000 and Lorraine said a year later she was severely assaulted and when she decided to open a case with the police, family members intervened and convinced her not to.

She said on June 21, Kekana had attacked her with an axe while she was sleeping, and poured paraffin over her on September 5.
