Maintenance defaulters are being targeted in a renewed effort by the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DOJ& CD).

The department said in a statement on Thursday that it is intensifying its Operation Isondlo campaign‚ one of the initiatives “that aim to ensure that children are adequately supported by their parents”.

Between April 2015 and 10 November 2015‚ the department attached the pensions of 49 maintenance defaulters to the value of R2 547 742.91‚ of which R 1 673 330.87 has been paid out to beneficiaries.

“In March 2015‚ the DOJCD identified 1 078 outstanding warrants of arrest for maintenance defaulters. As at the end of October 2015‚ we have executed 391 warrants worth approximately R 3‚ 358 537.54‚” the statement says.

“To date‚ there are 687 (from 1 078) outstanding warrants totalling on average R 3.4 million‚ which we will be executing during the 16 Days of Activism of No Violence Against Women & Children Campaign‚ this quarter.”

The department listed several beneficiaries of its campaign.

Chantal Michaels from Strandfontein applied for child maintenance in 2010 for her two minor children and an order was granted for an amount of R1 500 per month per child by the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court. The total amount owing will be paid out to Michaels after it is forwarded from the Government Pension Fund.

Gillian Mercia from Simon’s Town applied for child maintenance in 2005 for her two minor children and an order was granted by the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court in June 2005 for the amount of R1 000 per month per child. The money was ordered to be paid out from the respondent’s pension fund for future maintenance‚ and was paid over to the Guardian Fund in October 2015.

The department has vowed to step up its efforts.
