Johannesburg - Firefighters are still trying to extinguish a fire which destroyed about seven informal dwellings in Lamontville, Durban, in the early hours of Monday morning, KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services said.

The fire began around 05:00, spokesperson Robert Mckenzie told News24. One person was being treated on the scene.

It was not immediately clear whether there had been any fatalities.

"We don't have a fatality count because the guys are still fighting the fire," Mckenzie said.
