Police foil attempted robbery at Durban business

Six suspects are due to appear in then Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday after police foiled an attempted robbery at a business premises in the Wentworth area in Durban on Friday morning after receiving information about a planned business robbery in the area.

Kwazulu-Natal police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said while observing the area police spotted six armed men entering the premises and reacted swiftly. One suspect was arrested at the scene but the other five attempted to flee on foot.

“A chase ensued and while chasing them‚ it is alleged that the suspects fired shots towards the members. All five suspects were subsequently arrested and three unlicensed firearms were recovered. Three of them had slight injuries as a result of dog bites and razor wire cuts. They were treated at the scene by paramedics‚” Maj Zwane said.

He added that the suspects‚ aged between 30 and 40 years‚ would be charged with attempted business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

 KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the swift reaction by the police.

“This arrest shows a strong partnership between the police and the community. We once again emphasise that the community must be the eyes and ears of the police and give valuable information about criminal activities in their areas‚” she said.
