KZN MEC welcomes harsh sentences for two men responsible for family massacre

Kwazulu-Natal MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Willies Mchunu‚ has welcomed the life sentences meted out to two men for the massacre of a family in Mabeleni‚ Mtwaluma‚ on the KZN South Coast earlier this month.

Eight people — four men‚ two women and two babies — were killed in the attack.

Police subsequently arrested SE Mncwabe and TD Mncwabe and charged the two men with eight counts of murder‚ one of attempted murder and one of arson.

On Thursday the two men pleaded guilty and were each sentenced to seven life sentences and a further 20 years’ imprisonment.

Mchunu said the convictions sent a loud and clear message to criminals and would-be offenders that murderers would be brought to justice.

“This was one of the most inhumane crimes committed against a family. The incident sparked horror‚ shock and outrage in the province and country. The pain felt by the relatives of family of eight‚ their friends and colleagues is immeasurable.

“The sentences handed down by the court are strongly welcomed and we hope it serves as a deterrent to those who commit and would be offenders of such violent and brutal crimes‚” Mchunu said.
