Durban – A police constable was shot and wounded while responding to an ATM bombing involving 20 suspects in KwaDukuza, KwaZulu-Natal, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

KZN police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said police received information and responded at around 01:30.

“As they approached the scene, they were shot at by a group of heavily armed robbers. A police constable was wounded and suspects fled the scene in their getaway vehicles.”

Zwane said at this stage it was not clear whether anything was taken.

“It appeared that a group of more than 20 heavily armed men hijacked and disarmed security guards in the vicinity while others bombed [an] ATM.”

He said cases of armed robbery, malicious damage to property, attempted murder and hijacking were being investigated. No arrests have been made.
