Cop who conspired against his police station nabbed

The Hawks on Tuesday arrested a police constable for conspiring to rob the Dunnottar police station of its firearms.

The 30-year-old constable is stationed at the Dunnottar police station‚ just outside Springs in Gauteng.

The station was attacked on 8 June 2015. During the attack Warrant Officer Aaron Vusi Mahlangu was shot eight times. Mahlangu was in hospital for two months recovering from his wounds.

It emerged only later that the attack was an attempt to steal the firearms.

A month after the attack three suspects‚ Mduduzi Jali (49)‚ Prince Mnisi-Thobe Zondozi (38) and John Molefe (45)‚ were arrested in Kwa-Thema in connection with the attack. They revealed that they were told by the arrested constable that only one female Sergeant would be on duty at the Community Service Centre‚ and that the constable would be on duty but patrolling outside.

Instead the trio were confronted by two police officers‚ one of them Mahlangu‚ who was wounded when they fired at him‚ but he returned fire until they fled.

Since then police uncovered telephone conversations linking the constable to the trio.

Jali and Molefe are still behind bars while Zondozi has been released on R10 000 bail. The three will appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on 13 November 2013.

The constable will appear before the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday‚ facing charges of attempted murder‚ corruption‚ armed robbery‚ conspiracy to commit crime‚ malicious damage to property‚ possession of unlicensed firearm and well as unlawful possession of ammunition.
