Outcry over Hilton College 'gang bang' - Boys' private school confirms pupil posted picture

Sixty-eight likes for a photograph of four Hilton College boys in a mock gang rape of a pupil in a St Anne's School for Girls uniform.

That's the Instagram picture that caused a flurry of social media outrage and condemnation yesterday and sparked an investigation at the affluent KwaZulu-Natal private school, seen to be one of the finest schools on the continent.

The picture, that was posted by a Hilton College matric pupil on his private Instagram account on Tuesday, shows four Hilton College boys wearing in uniform enacting the gang rape of a school "girl".

The "girl" is in reality a boy clad in a blue uniform belonging to the neighbouring St Anne's School for Girls.

The picture was captioned: "Apparently we are "f**kbois" yet they love us anyway".

A "f**kboi" is a term associated with a loser.

In a statement Hilton College principal Peter Ducasse confirmed that one of their pupils posted the "offensive photograph" on his Instagram account.

"We are appalled and cannot condemn this sufficiently strongly. It flies in the face of all that the school stands for and teaches."

Ducasse said they were investigating and would take "appropriate" disciplinary action once the investigation was complete.

The boys' private school, with 2015 fees that stand at R219500, would not say when the incident took place, whether the boys were still at school or why they had posted the picture.

When contacted, the pupil who posted the picture on his Instagram account, cut the call.

St Anne's headmaster Dave Arguile also issued a statement yesterday condemning the "highly offensive" picture.

"The picture simulates a sexual act and is accompanied by an offensive caption," said Arguile adding that he became aware of the "caption" on Wednesday.

"I have subsequently had meetings about the incident with our Form 6 girls, the Old Girls Guild Committee and our staff, as well as brought the incident to the attention of Sharon Wells, chairlady of our college board," he said.

He said St Anne's would keep a close eye on Hilton College's response to this incident.

Meanwhile, outraged South Africans took to social media slamming the school and the boys "for perpetuating the rape culture" with #HiltonCollege trending.

One user posted: "Privilege cushions against the consequences of rape culture. Money buys access to everything, including women's bodies."

However, some users, including old boys, defended the picture and comments.

Another user posted: "Apparently having group sex or even pretending to do so = rape regardless of the woman's own free will."

The picture also generated debate among social media users that the youth needed schooling on gender and misogyny.
