North West businessman Wandile Bozwana, who was assassinated in Pretoria on Friday, has been hailed as an "unsung billionaire" by his friends.

They described him as a humble go-getter who started out as a police officer in the homeland of Bophuthatswana before venturing into business.

The 43-year-old tycoon was gunned down while travelling with a colleague, Mpho Baloyi, on the N1 north from Joburg.

The two were believed to be en route from Sandton to Mooikloof when gunmen in a BMW M3 allegedly pulled up next to their car near the Garsfontein off-ramp and opened fire on the branded Renault Clio.
