Victory over Sanral a ‘win over national government's oppressive ways’

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Wednesday claimed a court victory over the South African National Roads Agency Limited’s plan to toll roads in the Western Cape.

The party’s leader‚ Mmusi Maimane‚ tweeted: “#DA we just won our court case against Sanral in the city of CT to oppose. Now GP let the DA deliver for you. Woza2016 #allwedoisKeepwinning”.

The DA in the Western Cape later released a statement saying: “The Western Cape High Court’s decision today to set aside Sanral’s unlawful decision to toll the N1 and N2 in the province‚ is an enormous victory for the DA-led City of Cape Town and all the people of the province.

“We stood up against the national government and against SANRAL and stated loud and clear that what happened in Gauteng‚ will not happen in the Western Cape. And today our victory belongs to the poor people of the Western Cape.”

Cape Town‚ the DA said‚ argued that the decision years ago to declare the highways as toll roads was unlawful and that tolling would have a damaging impact on the city and region.

Fin24 reported on Wednesday morning that it also argued that the minister of transport at the time‚ Jeff Radebe‚ “made the decision to toll the roads on the basis that the state would not carry any costs”.

“The City also argued that the people of the Western Cape were never properly consulted and that the tolling of the roads would have been unconstitutional‚” the DA statement said.

“Today the people of the Western Cape have won against the national government’s oppressive ways.”
