Crime is everyone's problem: Hout Bay residents

The Hout Bay Civic Association and the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) held a march against crime on Monday and handed a memorandum of grievances to local authorities.

In a joint statement‚ the two organisations said it was a major concern that “the mayor of Cape Town’s office believes crime is not the problem of local government”.

“Crime transcends all barriers and should not be used for political point scoring by political parties leading different spheres of government.

“It is the view of the Hout Bay Civic Association and Sanco that crime is everyone’s problem and we all have a responsibility to fight this monster.”

In its letter to the Department of Police‚ the two organisations say that a number of issues need to be addressed urgently. These include the need for additional police personnel and security infrastructure in Hout Bay‚ and that the Cape Town Metropolitan Police be deployed to patrol and police Hout Bay.

They also ask that the “provision of services and amenities to areas historically and currently affected by the legacy of colonialism and apartheid” be prioritised.
