Pupil dies in minibus accident

An Eastern Cape pupil died in an accident on Friday afternoon after the driver apparently lost control of the minibus transporting seven schoolchildren.

The accident‚ involving pupils from Smuts Ndamase Senior Secondary School‚ happened between Mangcwangule and Mthombe.

Department of health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo confirmed that a pupil had died. The name of the teenager‚ aged about 16‚ cannot be released until the family has been informed.

“One patient was air lifted to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital [in Mthatha] in a critical condition. The other pupils were unhurt‚” Kupelo said.

Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea said the cause of the accident was not yet known.

“There will be an investigation into what caused the accident. There were no other vehicles involved. The driver lost control and the bus rolled down a hill into a forest‚” Machaea said.
