The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) on Monday welcomed reports that controversial Pretoria preacher Penuel Mnguni had been arrested‚ and commended the speedy response by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) that led to his arrest.

“While animal rights activists are defending the rights of animals that were abused‚ the ACDP will take this matter to the Human Rights Commission in defence of the human rights of these congregants — whose right to dignity have been violated‚” ACDP president Rev Kenneth Meshoe said on Monday.

“Feeding congregants dead rats has harmful effects to their health and could expose them to serious diseases carried by rats‚ insects and other animals.”

On Sunday‚ police confirmed that a controversial Pretoria preacher‚ referred to as a prophet‚ who allegedly ordered his followers to consume live snakes telling them it would taste like chocolate‚ had been arrested.

“There can be no defence of such wickedness in the name of religion‚” said Rev Meshoe.

Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson Captain Rheineth Motlana said prophet Mnguni of End Times Disciples Ministries would probably appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of cruelty to animals.

The charges had been laid by the Tshwane SPCA‚ Motlana said.
