One of the legal representative for miners injured during violence at Lonmin’s Marikana platinum mine in August 2012‚ Advocate Dali Mphofu‚ said on ECNA television on Sunday that lawyers will take statements from victims to prepare for civil claims against the government.

He was speaking after a report back meeting to miners and their families following the release last week of the Farlam commission of inquiry report into the violence in which 34 miners were shot dead by police.

Miners at the meeting told their lawyers that they’re unhappy with the commission’s findings.

Mphofu added that an announcement on the way forward would be made in a week’s time.

Seventy-eight miners were injured in the massacre. In the days before the shooting‚ 10 other people were killed in violence during a six-week unprotected strike at the mine – including non-striking miners‚ security guards and two police officers who were hacked to death.

The Farlam Commission recommended that police commissioner General Riah Phiyega’s fitness to hold office be investigated.
