A traffic policeman who fatally shot a man‚ allegedly in self-defence‚ is under investigation by the SA Police Service.

“Initial reports indicate that the officer shot the man‚ reported to be his gardener‚ twice‚ after the latter attacked him with a bush knife‚” the MEC for Transport‚ Community Safety and Liaison‚ Willies Mchunu‚ said in a statement.

The officer sustained a wound on the back of his head‚ for which he is receiving treatment in hospital.

Mchunu said the officer had alerted the police and his supervisor to report the incident.

“His service pistol was removed from him and taken in for ballistic testing.

“The matter is with the SAPS now‚ and we will therefore await their investigation‚” Mchunu said.
