Match-fixing allegations ‘have nothing to do with the play-offs’: PSL CEO

The probe into the alleged match-fixing of Premier Soccer League games is unlikely to be concluded before the promotion play-offs wrap up on Wednesday.

This is after PSL chief executive officer Brand de Villiers confirmed on Thursday that investigators were “still busy” looking into a complaint made by Moroka Swallows two weeks ago.

The claims became public after it emerged that the Dube Birds‚ who avoided automatic relegation by finishing second from bottom of the table‚ had accused Free State Stars of influencing the outcome of a match in the final weeks of the season.

Swallows then teamed up with relegated side AmaZulu in a court bid on the eve of the play-offs in an attempt to stop the matches from taking place. The Johannesburg High Court struck the matter off the roll and ordered the two clubs to pay the PSL’s costs.

“The investigators are still busy with the interviews‚” said De Villiers. “These allegations have got nothing to do with the play-offs. Our rules are clear that if a team finishes at the bottom of the log‚ then they will get relegated. And if a team is second from bottom‚ then they will be involved in the play-offs. That hasn’t changed.”

De Villiers suggested that the league was not too bothered that the matches between Swallows‚ Black Leopards and Jomo Cosmos were to be played while the dark cloud of these match-fixing allegations is still hovering.

“Once the investigators have a final report then the relevant sanctions will be handed out by the chairman of the disciplinary committee‚” De Villiers said.
