Nobel Peace Laureate Mohamed ElBaradei will explore efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons with a talk entitled “Global Peace and Security” at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) on Tuesday.
“ElBaradei will sketch some of the paradoxes and puzzles around undeclared nuclear activities across the globe and then consider key obstacles to a just and lasting prospect of global peace‚” a UJ statement said.
ElBaradei shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 with the International Atomic Energy Agency he was director-general of “for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way".
“The talk is a rare opportunity to hear a voice which earned political credibility in the Middle East when he questioned the claims about weapons of mass destruction that were being used to justify the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003‚” says Professor Chris Landsberg of the South African Research Chairs Initiative of African Diplomacy and Foreign Policy (UJ).
