Danny Jordaan has been appointed mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Jordaan who is currently president of the South African Football Association replaces 82-year-old Ben Fihla.

"He is a cadre of the ANC. He's not a stranger here. To accelerate service delivery, we think he is the right man," ANC spokesman, Zizi Kodwa told ENCA in an interview.

Over the past few weeks, three candidates were named as potential replacements for Fihla.

Those being President of the South African Football Association and PE-born Danny Jordaan, Nelson Mandela Bay Chamber of Business president and businessman, Mandla Madwara, and Bicks Ndoni.

Ndoni has now been appointed Jordaan's deputy.

Jordaan also a member of the Local Organising Committee for the 2010 World Cup which happened here in South Africa.  He is also a member of the FIFA Marketing and Television board.

He is a Port Elizabeth native and has been a long standing member of the ANC. He was once a member of parliament but was recalled and placed in the sports field.

Jordaan will not be expected to resign as Safa president.
