Retail giant Checkers has come under fire with complaints about their food safety standards.

A customer returned old chicken to the Checkers in Plumstead at the beginning of the year, in return, he was given what he thought was freshly grilled chicken.

After biting into the chicken, to his horror, he discovered that he had a mouth full of maggots.

According to health24, the customer stormed off to the store to complain and was offered a R50 voucher.

Unsatisfied with the response, the customer demanded proof that the store was certified in food safety.

The incident was escalated to management who apologised with a R500 voucher and said that the incident was isolated.

"We have since then dealt with it rigorously internally," said spokesperson for the Checkers group Sarita van Wyk. "We have also discussed the matter again with the customer to assure him that the necessary disciplinary and corrective action has been taken."

Other customers have come forward with complaints of glass found in food, rats and cockroaches running around as well as incidents of food poisoning.
