Police battle deluge of sexual crimes

Kidnapping‚ rape‚ assault‚ domestic violence‚ robbery and attempted murder: 349 suspects described as sexual related offenders were arrested by KwaZulu-Natal Family Violence‚ Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units – and that is in just one month.

This shocking statistic was disclosed by Provincial Commissioner‚ Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni‚ in a statement today‚ in praising the “dedicated teams of detectives (who) have been shuttling to and from the different courts throughout the province in the quest to see justice done to several victims of rape and sexual violation”.

“From 1 April 2015 to 30 April 2015‚ the members arrested a total of 349 suspects for sexual related offences including kidnapping‚ assaults‚ domestic violence‚ sexual assault‚ robbery‚ attempted murder‚ house breaking and theft‚ abduction and rape cases in the province‚” the SAPS said.

During the month‚ police secured convictions against 51 criminals after they were found guilty of sexual related offences in various courts. Six life sentences and at total of 412 years of imprisonment were handed down by courts during the past month.

“The sentences handed down will send a clear message to like-minded would-be offenders that the police will trace‚ arrest and successfully prosecute them‚” Ngobeni said.
