Search for missing toddler after boat capsizes at Hartbeespoort

The search for a boy who went missing when the boat he was on capsized at Hartbeespoort Dam resumed on Monday.

According to the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)‚ “Station 25 Hartbeespoort Dam crew responded to reports of a boat capsized near to the Eagle Waters Resort” just before 4pm on Sunday.

The NSRI said a search was launched for the boy‚ said to be turning 2 in June‚ who went missing after “the 4.5m rubber duck capsized about 300m from the bank”.

Apparently the boat had been making a tight turn when it is suspected that the tube it was towing “dug in and may have caused the boat to capsize causing those onboard to be thrown out”.

“It is believed that no life-jackets were being worn by those on the boat at the time‚” the NSRI said.

“The two children on the tube were not affected by the capsizing of the boat.”

The boat and the survivors – the boat’s skipper‚ the boy’s mother and the two other children — were towed to shore.

“An extensive search continued until after sunset but there remained no sign of the missing toddler‚” the NSRI said.
