Six arrested in raid on dog fight

The National Council of SPCA’s Special Investigations Unit raided an organised dog fight in Lawley township‚ south of Johannesburg.

Six men were arrested and will appear in the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto on Wednesday charged in terms of the Animals Protection Act.

On Saturday night a team of inspectors from the National Council of SPCA and the Gauteng SAPS K9 Unit swooped on an organised dog fight in Lawley.

“Once again‚ the heart-wrenching scene of two exhausted‚ broken and bleeding dog victims in a bloodied fighting pit was discovered by the raid team. One dog’s shoulder had been torn from its body. The other dog‚ struggling to breathe from a damaged trachea and bleeding around his throat‚ collapsed in an inspector’s arms‚” said NSPCA’s Wendy Willson.

A further 10 dogs were rescued from the property‚ many of which had extensive injuries. They were taken to a secure location for medical attention.

Investigations are continuing and more arrests are imminent.

“Dog fighting tears at the moral fabric of a society. It condones a level of violence and cruelty that not only has great consequences to the community‚ but it also walks hand in hand with other criminal activities‚” said Willson.

“We salute all those who stand up‚ speak out and take action to eradicate this horrific crime from their communities.”
