The Congress of the People says Africa Day must to used to “conscientise South Africans to our ties to Africa and the strong bonds we should have with fellow Africans”.
In the wake of the recent “xenophobic outbreak and the extent of Afro-phobia‚” Cope president Mosiuoa Lekota said in a statement‚ “the need for us to be properly reconstructed Africans has never been more important than now”.
The party said educational institutions should arrange for students to wear “African attire and participate in a two-hour programme celebrating our Africanness”‚ while the “department of education can provide fact sheets and ideas for schools [which] can use these in whichever way they feel appropriate”.
The Human Sciences Research Council‚ along with 10 partners‚ will be holding its 5th African Unity for Renaissance conference and Africa Day celebrations from May 22 to 22 in Pretoria‚ the statement read.
“Just as we are all proud to be South Africans‚ we should all be equally proud to be Africans.”
