South African power utility Eskom said on Friday it had agreed with Alstom to terminate control and instrumentation contract for the Kusile power station, which is under construction.

The termination of the C&I contract for the Kusile Power Station would not affect the C&I Works Contract for the Medupi power station, Eskom said in a statement.

In 2013, Eskom promised that South Africans can expect electricity generated from coal-fired power stations Medupi in Limpopo and Kusile in Mpumalanga in 2014 but it has not been likely.

DA urged the minister to increase allocations to renewable energy projects and to ensure that Eskom recovered money from non-performing contractors -- a reference to the delays it experienced at its new Medupi and Kusile power plants.
