A 17-year-old Mpumalanga pupil accused of stabbing a schoolmate to death during a fight over a girl appeared in the Kabokweni Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The teenager, who cannot be named because he is a minor, was arrested on Friday outside the Gedlembane Secondary School near Mbombela, a Sapa correspondent reported.

He was not asked to plead to a murder charge on Monday. His case was postponed to Wednesday for a formal bail application.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the 17-year-old allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old pupil in a fight over a girl.

Provincial education spokesman Jasper Zwane said the department would investigate the matter.

"The department will send officials to gather a report detailing what happened and at the same time render counselling to the affected learners and educators," he said.
