School caretaker arrested for alleged rape

A man was arrested for the alleged rape of an 11-year-old learner at the Ncapayi Junior Secondary School in Butterworth, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

The 55-year-old man -- the caretaker of the school -- was arrested on Friday, Captain Jackson Manatha said. The victim told her teachers of the alleged abuse on Wednesday. The school then relayed the incident to the mother of the child who then opened the rape case.

"It is alleged that the caretaker was with the victim and her younger sister on Tuesday [afternoon]. [He] allegedly gave the victim's younger sister money to go and buy herself ice. While the younger sister was away, the suspect is alleged to have raped the victim in a classroom," Manatha said.

The man was charged with rape and was due to appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's court on Monday.
