Police to clamp down on looting

The police in Moroka, Soweto will be clamping down on the people behind the lootings around Soweto.

This comes after numerous tip-offs that have been communicated to them.

The provincial commissioner Lesetja Mothiba said that they are following on these leads.

"There should be some of organisation, there should be some of grouping which is collective in nature," he said.

"Yes we did receive some information that we are following that we don't want to share at this time in moment.

"We have informed our commanders at local level that there should be some form of organised nature and we are hoping that we will go deep into that and find out exactly what is the motive behind, who are the people behind this but at this moment we don't have any specific information that we can share," said Mothiba.

He confirmed that they have received fresh reports of looting in Kagiso which has resulted in one person being killed.

"The situation in Kagiso as we reported this morning, is that there were incidents of looting that were reported last night. The specific one was the one that resulted in a Pakistani shooting dead a local of the area.

"During the looting, one person was accidentally shot at," said Mothiba.

General Nkuna said that the looting incidents in Protea Glen were mainly directed at foreign nationals.

"But other areas there were locals that were affected. Only Protea Glen for now is foreign nationals," he said.
