Three killed in Congo during protests over president's future

Three people died and 10 others were injured Tuesday in student demonstrations in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, after they took to the streets to protest a draft law that would allow President Joseph Kabila to extend his stay in power.

In an apparent effort to curb further protests, authorities placed restrictions on internet access and text messaging early on Tuesday.

The news comes one day after police forcibly dispersed thousands of protesters in Kinshasa, resulting in eight protester casualties, according to the government.

Opposition parties, which demand that Kabila step down when his mandate expires in 2016, called for mass demonstrations against the new legislation, which is currently being debated in the Senate.

The latest upheaval comes after years of unrest in the central African country, which has been plagued by multiple wars and ineffectual governance under Kabila.
