A metro police officer was arrested for shooting dead a taxi driver in Naledi, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officer had pulled up alongside a taxi which he felt was blocking the road, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

The JMPD officer, 32, allegedly shot the taxi driver, 38, at around 8.30pm after being threatened with a screwdriver.

"The taxi driver was certified dead at the scene and the [officer] was arrested and will be charged with murder," said Makhubela.

He would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) would investigate the incident.
