By Tuesday morning, 3.8 million South Africans had submitted their tax returns, the SA Revenue Service (SARS) said.
"Of those, just over two million returns were completed via eFiling and over 1.8m completed electronically at a SARS branch," spokeswoman Marika Muller said in a statement.
"Just 3929 physical paper returns have been submitted thus far. Tax Season 2014 will end this Friday (November 21) for most South African taxpayers, and Sars urges all those who have not yet submitted a return to do so as soon as possible."
Sars had seen a steep increase in the number of people using eFiling, the contact centre, and visiting branches this week.
On Monday nearly 46,000 returns were filed, almost double the number of the previous Monday. This increase was expected to continue for the rest of the week.
"As ever, taxpayers are warned to be on the lookout for fraud and phishing scams, where criminals try to gain access to their banking details by sending e-mails which pretend to be from Sars," she said.
"Sars will never ask for personal, tax, banking or eFiling details (passwords, login information etc) via phone or e-mail. Taxpayers will also never be asked to log into the eFiling website from a link in an e-mail."
Muller said a tax refund was not a right. All claims not substantiated by the correct supporting documentation would not be approved.
