Killed TUT student was in first year

The TUT student stabbed to death at the institution's Soshanguve campus was in his first year, the institution said on Monday.

He was named as SB Masuku, who was studying language practice, Tshwane University of Technology spokeswoman Willa de Ruyter said.

According to the police, he was killed at a women's residence on Saturday night.

De Ruyter said in a statement that another student was in a critical condition in the George Mukhari Hospital.

Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi it seemed as if Masuku and the injured student stabbed each other during a fight.

Police arrested three TUT students following the death. They were charged with murder, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and would appear in the Soshanguve Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

De Ruyter said student leaders had since raised concerns about security on campus. An investigation was under way to determine the cause of the crime. Trauma counselling would be provided to students affected by the killing.
