'No bail, no bail': Uproar as Taegrin Morris'alleged killer appears

Shouts of "no bail" erupted in the packed Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday following the brief appearance of a man accused of killing four-year-old Taegrin Morris.

Members of the public attending proceedings chanted "no bail, no bail" and "genoeg is genoeg" (enough is enough) when Thamsanqa Twala was led back down to the cells.

Morris died after being dragged behind his parents' hijacked car in Reiger Park, on the East Rand, in July.

People stood on the benches of the court gallery, screaming and shouting. Some of the slain toddler's relatives burst into tears.

The crowd had remained composed during proceedings. A few people stood up and walked to the front of the court to take pictures of Twala.

Prosecutor Henk Strydom explained that Twala was charged with murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Dressed in a blue and black jacket, Twala followed proceedings through a Xhosa interpreter.

His lawyer indicated that Twala wanted to apply for bail. The State intended opposing this.

The matter was postponed to November 7 for the bail application.

Twala was arrested in Katlehong on Tuesday, police said.

"The suspect was... positively identified as one of the hijackers who hijacked the family while visiting a relative on the day," said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

Taegrin was in a VW Golf with his mother, father, and sister in Reiger Park, when three men approached them. The men ordered the family out of the car. Taegrin was caught in his seat belt and dragged alongside the car as the hijackers drove off.

He was found dead in Boksburg, about 10km away.
