The magistrate said Van Deventer should be aware that "in the South African context", the use of the word kaffir was both humiliating and hurtful in the extreme.
The ruling brought to an end protracted mitigation launched by domestic worker Nomasomi Gloria Kente, who had in fact claimed R100,000 damages.
Kente opened crimen injuria and assault cases against Van Deventer and took out a restraining order to prevent him from calling her names or entering her room.
Kente previously testified that Van Deventer assaulted and swore at her. She alleged he grabbed her by her pyjamas, verbally assaulted her and spat in her face.
Van Deventer admitted to racially insulting her but denied the assault.
