There has been mixed reactions from people on both Facebook and Twitter following the Finance Minister’s mid-term budget speech.
Minister Nhlanhla Nene said that the government hopes to save about R1.3 billion in the next two years.
He also promised to cut some of government official’s expenditure ranging from travel costs to bookings of conference venues and catering.
It has been reported in the past that the government spends a lot of money on travelling costs and expensive catering during press briefings and other functions. Nene says no more.
Thebe Champ Kgwetiane commended the Minister for cutting the travelling costs: “Stopping government official’s trips is a good point they waste a lot of cash for nothing”.
Mzandile Hlophe on Facebook holds a different view and feels this is not enough saving and has called on the government to cut the monthly children grants.
“Its time we do away with this children grants. U [you] give birth u [you] on your own. I am tired of kids having kids and we all have to feed them,” said Hlophe in a comment on Facebook.
Dintle Didi Phakoe also held the same view: “I was actually hoping the minister would do away with social grants (esp. the child support grant)”.
In response to Nene’s R32.6 million allocation to the Department of Health for Ebola control and prevention measure, Klenkie Mpotu asked “Why 35.6 million for Ebola that has not yet affected our people in the country?”
Kgwetiane also asked if the R20 billion funding allocated to Eskom would in any help with load shedding.
