A man has been arrested in central Johannesburg for allegedly burning his wife with a hot iron during an argument, police said on Tuesday.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said that when the man arrived home on Monday night he started hitting his 30-year-old wife with his fists.

During the argument he plugged in a clothes iron and when it was hot burned her with the appliance.

He did this in the presence of their eight-year-old son.

The attack took place at their residence at the Central Fire Station on the corner of Kruis and Fredericks streets in the city.

He was not a fireman but worked at the station, said Mbele.

His wife was treated for burn wounds on the scene and he was taken to Johannesburg Central police cells.

He would be charged with assault with intention to do grievous bodily harm.

The boy was not physically harmed.
