Baby dies at William Nicol petrol station

A baby died at a William Nicol petrol station on Wednesday afternoon.

Paramedics were called to a petrol station on Wednesday after a one year-old baby had stopped breathing. It is unclear what caused the sudden stop in breathing but a woman who called Xolani Gwala's afternoon show on Radio 702 to air her frustration and anger, alleges that the paramedics did not put in enough effort to save the baby’s life.

Netcare 911 remains adamant that the paramedics did all they could to save the child.

The caller claimed that the paramedics refused to transport the baby to the nearest clinic and the parents had to personally transport the baby to Sandton Medi Clinic.

Craig Grindell, Chief Operating Officer of Netcare 911, said that the paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and stopped upon realisation that the baby was not responding.

“This was devastating for the family who understandably had difficulty in accepting that the little girl could not be saved. Despite this dire situation the Netcare 911 team then continued with CPR and placed the little girl in an ambulance and transported her to the nearest hospital,” Grindell added.
