The North West department of transport has allocated R240 million for a scholar transport programme, MEC Gaoage Molapisi said on Wednesday.

"This is in line with the Constitutional obligation of improving access to free and quality basic education for all South Africans," he said.

In his budget speech Molapisi said his department was currently providing transport services to about 51,567 pupils in this financial year.

He said all routes would be redesigned and all transport operators had already been instructed to take their vehicles for compulsory testing at government testing stations.
