ANC must root out corruption: NUM

The African National Congress must deal with corruption decisively, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said on Tuesday.

"Remove all elements or deployees with dubious records from strategic deployment," general secretary Frans Baleni told reporters in Johannesburg after the union's central executive committee meeting.

He said deployees who did not declare conflicts of interest must be sanctioned by the organisation.

"ANC members must be able to march against an ANC municipality that failed to bring service delivery."

He said the union was proud that none of its members deployed in government had been accused of corruption.

"The NUM installed good ethics: Never to take from others, it is never about you, but who you serve."

Agriculture Minister Senzeni Zokwana is the union's former president.

Baleni said the union supported a Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) resolution to swell the ANC's ranks.

"The central executive committee noted that this resulted in worker leaders or officials within the federation assuming positions of leadership as preferred by members of the ANC."

He said the NUM appreciated the ANC's attempts at mediating Cosatu's problems. The union called for the speedy conclusion of this process, being led by ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa.
