Thailand's divorce rate rose 38 per cent between 2003 and 2012, a media report said Tuesday.

The Public Health Ministry said there were 111,377 registered divorces in 2012, compared with 80,836 in 2003, The Nation newspaper reported.

There were 314,338 marriages registered in 2012 compared with 328,356 in 2003, down 4.3 per cent.

The increase in divorces was due to more couples experiencing work-related stress while "the value of independence" made them less tolerant of each other, said ministry spokeswoman Panpimol Wipulakorn.

The statistics were released on Monday to mark National Family Day.
